If you live in the Chicago area and are a Canadian citizen then the Canadian consulate in Chicago will be able to assist you if you live in the following areas Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Northwest Indiana and Kansas City Metro. So you lost your passport and need assistance. You will need to report the loss to your local police station for a case number. You will need this when you apply for a new temporary travel document. The Consulate and Embassy does not issue passports. If you need to register a birth, then the original birth certificate would need to be taken to the Consulate or Embassy to register the child. Then the child can also obtain a travel document to return to Canada.

The US has been divided into segments for Canadians. When you need consular assistance you will need to check which State you are in and the Consulate that covers that State. If you live are located in the States of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont. Then the Consulate you need to call is the Canadian Consulate in Boston who covers this region. If you need documents legalised or other assistance then they will be able to assist you.

Now if you live in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, South Carolina or in the State of Tennessee. Then the Canadian Consulate in Atlanta will be there to assist you. Birth registration, emergency travels documents or legalising documents. That Consulate will deal with all the Consular assist that you will need. Finally the States of Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, West Virginia as well as Virginia. This is where the Canadian Embassy in Washington will be able to assist you with what you need. Note that you will need to call them to make an appointment to register a birth, legalisation of documents and other consular services. Also check that they will be open. This as the Consulate and Embassy will be closed on American public holidays as well as on Canadian public holidays.
