If you are in Switzerland on holiday and you lose your passport. Then the Canadian Embassy in Switzerland will be able to assist you. You will need to report the loss of the document to the Swiss police. They will open a case and provide you with a case number. You will need this case number for the Embassy.

Firstly there you will need to complete the needed forms and then ensure that you provide them with the case number for the lost passport. They will then issue you with a temporary travel document so that you can return to Canada. You can also wait for a new permanent passport.

Consular Assistance

Should you be getting married while in Switzerland. You would need to be able to prove that you are single. The Embassy in Bern will be able to provide this for you. If you are divorced you will need to have the original divorce decree. The Embassy will then issue you with a latter to state that you are not married.

This is called a freedom to marry letter or a letter of no impediment. All Embassies do this for their citizens who get married while abroad. You will need to have this document or letter translated and certified for the Swiss authorities in order to register your marriage.  This in tern will need to be translated or certified in order to apply for a Canadian spouse visa or a partner visa for Canada.
